Some Lingo/Terminology
​
Attachment styles
Specific patterns of behavior that we develop in our adult relationships that are a direct result/directly influenced by our earliest relationships with our primary caregivers (often parents). Current Psychology has identified four main attachment styles: secure, anxious, avoidant, and disorganized although there are many different variations and nuances.

Co-Regulation
Co-regulation is the way that one individual's coherent, calm, and/or healthy state can directly influence another person's state and help them regulate (return to a coherent/healthy state). Coregulation operates at both biological (hormonal and nervous system) and behavioral (affective and cognitive) levels and plays a crucial role in the development of self-regulation.

Doula (Death Doula or Birth Doula)
A doula is a trained non-medical professional who provides emotional, physical, and spiritual support to a person during, and after a major life experience, such as childbirth, miscarriage, abortion, and dying.

Emotional Processing
Learning to recognize emotions, how they feel as sensations in the body, how to understand them, make sense of them, and take action in response to them in healthy ways.

Imprints
A lasting mark/impression that trauma can leave on the mind, body, and brain. Imprints can unconsciously affect how a person behaves in the present. Imprints are recognized in psychology and energy medicine.

Integration​​
Taking any insights or realizations from a transformational experience, especially those from altered states of consciousness, and processing them. Processing meaning to understand them more deeply, make sense of them, and apply those insights into your daily life.

Internal Resistance​
When we consciously or unconsciously have an aversion (push against/resist) change, something new. Especially if part of us wants to change but another part does not. This is common and can manifest itself as showing up late to a therapeutic appointment, canceling, emotional withdrawal, being confrontational etc.

Peak Experiences
Refers to an experience where we feel completely immersed in a sense of oneness/connection with the universe. Or an experience of intense ellatation where we feel a strong sense of belonging or experience a major revelation/breakthrough about ourselves or the world that we do not experience in our common day to day life. Peak experiences are often understood as mystical experiences.

Pendulation​
Our natural rythm/cycle of shifting from a state of contraction to a state of expansion. This word is used to describe nervous system regulation (shifting from a calm state to an alert/threatened state) and in somatic therapy to describe our relationship with trauma recovery as we go through periods of moving forward in our progress and periods of shutting down/regression.​

Regulation
The ability to respond to our emotional and physical states in healthy ways that promote coherence, clarity, and connection. While this term is still commonly used, the term behavioral mastery is considered more accurate since there is no way to "regulate" which implies control our emotions without using a form of suppression, denial or rejection. The term behavioral mastery allows our emotions to exist as they are and focusses on developing healthy responses to those emotions instead of trying to change/control them.

Reparenting Yourself
​Understanding, nurturing, and validating your own experiences, emotions, needs, and desires. Becoming a healthy parental figure for yourself. This especially applies to how we speak to and about ourselves as we learn to develop a loving internal dialogue/stream of consciousness towards the self and take loving actions towards ourselves in all the choices we make.

Shadow Work​​​​​
Exploring and integrating the unconscious aspects of oneself, such as repressed emotions, fears, desires, etc. Contrary to popular belief, shadow work is not just about exploring the "negative" or scary parts of our unconscious mind, but also discovering our hidden gifts as well. Shadow work is about bringing the unconscious (the dark unknown) into the light of awareness.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
